           Theroarofguns,thewhistlingofprojectiles,andthepiteousmoaningofthecook,whichroseabovetheothersounds,didnotceaseforamoment.Themistressrockedandhushedherbabyandwhenanyonecameintothecellaraskedinapatheticwhisperwhathadbecomeofherhusbandwhohadremainedinthestreet.Ashopmanwhoenteredtoldherthatherhusbandhadgonewithotherstothecathedral,whencetheywerefetchingthewonder-workingiconofSmolénsk.

           Noticinghim,anofficersaid:“Thetownisbeingabandoned.Getaway,getaway!”andthen,turningtothesoldiers,shouted:

           “I’llteachyoutorunintotheyards!”

           Alpátychwentbacktothehouse,calledthecoachman,andtoldhimtosetoff.
