           OntheslopingdescenttotheDnieperAlpátych’scartandthatoftheinnkeeper’swife,whichwereslowlymovingamidtherowsofsoldiersandofothervehicles,hadtostop.Inasidestreetnearthecrossroadswherethevehicleshadstopped,ahouseandsomeshopswereonfire.Thisfirewasalreadyburningitselfout.Theflamesnowdieddownandwerelostintheblacksmoke,nowsuddenlyflaredupagainbrightly,lightingupwithstrangedistinctnessthefacesofthepeoplecrowdingatthecrossroads.Blackfiguresflittedaboutbeforethefire,andthroughtheincessantcracklingoftheflamestalkingandshoutingcouldbeheard.Seeingthathistrapwouldnotbeabletomoveonforsometime,Alpátychgotdownandturnedintothesidestreettolookatthefire.Soldierswerecontinuallyrushingbackwardsandforwardsnearit,andhesawtwoofthemandamaninafriezecoatdraggingburningbeamsintoanotheryardacrossthestreet,whileotherscarriedbundlesofhay.

           Alpátychwentuptoalargecrowdstandingbeforeahighbarnwhichwasblazingbriskly.Thewallswereallonfireandthebackwallhadfallenin,thewoodenroofwascollapsing,andtherafterswerealight.Thecrowdwasevidentlywatchingfortherooftofallin,andAlpátychwatchedforittoo.

           “Alpátych!”afamiliarvoicesuddenlyhailedtheoldman.

           “Mercyonus!Yourexcellency!”answeredAlpátych,immediatelyrecognizingthevoiceofhisyoungprince.

           PrinceAndrewinhisridingcloak,mountedonablackhorse,waslookingatAlpátychfromthebackofthecrowd.
