           Theysaidthatundoubtedlywar,particularlyagainstsuchageniusasBonaparte(theycalledhimBonapartenow),needsmostdeeplydevisedplansandprofoundscientificknowledgeandinthatrespectPfuelwasagenius,butatthesametimeithadtobeacknowledgedthatthetheoristsareoftenone-sided,andthereforeoneshouldnottrustthemabsolutely,butshouldalsolistentowhatPfuel’sopponentsandpracticalmenofexperienceinwarfarehadtosay,andthenchooseamiddlecourse.TheyinsistedontheretentionofthecampatDrissa,accordingtoPfuel’splan,butonchangingthemovementsoftheotherarmies.Though,bythiscourse,neitheroneaimnortheothercouldbeattained,yetitseemedbesttotheadherentsofthisthirdparty.

           OfafourthopinionthemostconspicuousrepresentativewastheTsarévich,whocouldnotforgethisdisillusionmentatAusterlitz,wherehehadriddenoutattheheadoftheGuards,inhiscasqueandcavalryuniformastoareview,expectingtocrushtheFrenchgallantly;butunexpectedlyfindinghimselfinthefrontlinehadnarrowlyescapedamidthegeneralconfusion.Themenofthispartyhadboththequalityandthedefectoffranknessintheiropinions.TheyfearedNapoleon,recognizedhisstrengthandtheirownweakness,andfranklysaidso.Theysaid:“Nothingbutsorrow,shame,andruinwillcomeofallthis!WehaveabandonedVílnaandVítebskandshallabandonDrissa.Theonlyreasonablethinglefttodoistoconcludepeaceassoonaspossible,beforeweareturnedoutofPetersburg.
