Chapter 9

           Pfuelandhisadherentsdemandedaretirementintothedepthsofthecountryinaccordancewithpreciselawsdefinedbyapseudo-theoryofwar,andtheysawonlybarbarism,ignorance,orevilintentionineverydeviationfromthattheory.Tothispartybelongedtheforeignnobles,Wolzogen,Wintzingerode,andothers,chieflyGermans.

           Thesecondpartywasdirectlyopposedtothefirst;oneextreme,asalwayshappens,wasmetbyrepresentativesoftheother.ThemembersofthispartywerethosewhohaddemandedanadvancefromVílnaintoPolandandfreedomfromallprearrangedplans.Besidesbeingadvocatesofboldaction,thissectionalsorepresentednationalism,whichmadethemstillmoreone-sidedinthedispute.TheywereRussians:Bagratión,Ermólov(whowasbeginningtocometothefront),andothers.AtthattimeafamousjokeofErmólov’swasbeingcirculated,thatasagreatfavorhehadpetitionedtheEmperortomakehimaGerman.Themenofthatparty,rememberingSuvórov,saidthatwhatonehadtodowasnottoreason,orstickpinsintomaps,buttofight,beattheenemy,keephimoutofRussia,andnotletthearmygetdiscouraged.

           Tothethirdparty—inwhichtheEmperorhadmostconfidence—belongedthecourtierswhotriedtoarrangecompromisesbetweentheothertwo.Themembersofthisparty,chieflyciviliansandtowhomArakchéevbelonged,thoughtandsaidwhatmenwhohavenoconvictionsbutwishtoseemtohavesomegenerallysay.
