           Thesixthparty,theBennigsenites,said,onthecontrary,thatatanyratetherewasnoonemoreactiveandexperiencedthanBennigsen:“andtwistaboutasyoumay,youwillhavetocometoBennigseneventually.Lettheothersmakemistakesnow!”saidthey,arguingthatourretirementtoDrissawasamostshamefulreverseandanunbrokenseriesofblunders.“Themoremistakesthataremadethebetter.Itwillatanyratebeunderstoodallthesoonerthatthingscannotgoonlikethis.WhatiswantedisnotsomeBarclayorother,butamanlikeBennigsen,whomadehismarkin1807,andtowhomNapoleonhimselfdidjustice—amanwhoseauthoritywouldbewillinglyrecognized,andBennigsenistheonlysuchman.
