           TilltheTsarreachedit,eachregimentinitssilenceandimmobilityseemedlikealifelessbody,butassoonashecameupitbecamealive,itsthunderjoiningtheroarofthewholelinealongwhichhehadalreadypassed.Throughtheterribleanddeafeningroarofthosevoices,amidthesquaremassesoftroopsstandingmotionlessasifturnedtostone,hundredsofriderscomposingthesuitesmovedcarelesslybutsymmetricallyandaboveallfreely,andinfrontofthemtwomen—theEmperors.Uponthemtheundivided,tenselypassionateattentionofthatwholemassofmenwasconcentrated.

           StoppinginfrontofthePávlograds,theTsarsaidsomethinginFrenchtotheAustrianEmperorandsmiled.

           Seeingthatsmile,Rostóvinvoluntarilysmiledhimselfandfeltastillstrongerflowofloveforhissovereign.Helongedtoshowthatloveinsomewayandknowingthatthiswasimpossiblewasreadytocry.TheTsarcalledthecoloneloftheregimentandsaidafewwordstohim.
