           Inthedeathlikestillnessonlythetrampofhorseswasheard.ThiswastheEmperors’suites.TheEmperorsrodeuptotheflank,andthetrumpetsofthefirstcavalryregimentplayedthegeneralmarch.Itseemedasthoughnotthetrumpeterswereplaying,butasifthearmyitself,rejoicingattheEmperors’approach,hadnaturallyburstintomusic.Amidthesesounds,onlytheyouthfulkindlyvoiceoftheEmperorAlexanderwasclearlyheard.Hegavethewordsofgreeting,andthefirstregimentroared“Hurrah!”sodeafeningly,continuously,andjoyfullythatthementhemselveswereawedbytheirmultitudeandtheimmensityofthepowertheyconstituted.

           Rostóv,standinginthefrontlinesofKutúzov’sarmywhichtheTsarapproachedfirst,experiencedthesamefeelingaseveryothermaninthatarmy:afeelingofself-forgetfulness,aproudconsciousnessofmight,andapassionateattractiontohimwhowasthecauseofthistriumph.

           Hefeltthatatasinglewordfromthatmanallthisvastmass(andhehimselfaninsignificantatominit)wouldgothroughfireandwater,commitcrime,die,orperformdeedsofhighestheroism,andsohecouldnotbuttrembleandhisheartstandstillattheimminenceofthatword.

           “Hurrah!Hurrah!Hurrah!”thunderedfromallsides,oneregimentafteranothergreetingtheTsarwiththestrainsofthemarch,andthen“Hurrah!”...Thenthegeneralmarch,andagain“Hurrah!Hurrah!”growingeverstrongerandfullerandmergingintoadeafeningroar.
