           “Heisavery,verynice,honest,andpleasantfellow,”answeredBorís.

           AgainRostóvlookedintentlyintoBorís’eyesandsighed.Bergreturned,andoverthebottleofwineconversationbetweenthethreeofficersbecameanimated.TheGuardsmentoldRostóvoftheirmarchandhowtheyhadbeenmademuchofinRussia,Poland,andabroad.Theyspokeofthesayingsanddoingsoftheircommander,theGrandDuke,andtoldstoriesofhiskindnessandirascibility.Berg,asusual,keptsilentwhenthesubjectdidnotrelatetohimself,butinconnectionwiththestoriesoftheGrandDuke’squicktemperherelatedwithgustohowinGaliciahehadmanagedtodealwiththeGrandDukewhenthelattermadeatouroftheregimentsandwasannoyedattheirregularityofamovement.
