           Bergputonthecleanestofcoats,withoutaspotorspeckofdust,stoodbeforealookingglassandbrushedthehaironhistemplesupwards,inthewayaffectedbytheEmperorAlexander,and,havingassuredhimselffromthewayRostóvlookedatitthathiscoathadbeennoticed,lefttheroomwithapleasantsmile.

           “Ohdear,whatabeastIam!”mutteredRostóv,ashereadtheletter.

           “Why?”

           “Oh,whatapigIam,nottohavewrittenandtohavegiventhemsuchafright!Oh,whatapigIam!”herepeated,flushingsuddenly.“Well,haveyousentGabrielforsomewine?Allrightlet’shavesome!”

           IntheletterfromhisparentswasenclosedaletterofrecommendationtoBagratiónwhichtheoldcountessatAnnaMikháylovna’sadvicehadobtainedthroughanacquaintanceandsenttoherson,askinghimtotakeittoitsdestinationandmakeuseofit.

           “Whatnonsense!MuchIneedit!”saidRostóv,throwingtheletterunderthetable.

           “Whyhaveyouthrownthataway?”askedBorís.

           “Itissomeletterofrecommendation...whatthedevildoIwantitfor!”

           “Why‘Whatthedevil’?”saidBorís,pickingitupandreadingtheaddress.“Thisletterwouldbeofgreatusetoyou.”

           “Iwantnothing,andIwon’tbeanyone’sadjutant.”

           “Whynot?”inquiredBorís.

           “It’salackey’sjob!”

           “Youarestillthesamedreamer,Isee,”remarkedBorís,shakinghishead.

           “Andyou’restillthesamediplomatist!Butthat’snotthepoint...Come,howareyou?”askedRostóv.
