           AndatthatmomentlittleAndrewshoutedfromoutsidethedoor:“Papa!Mamma’sstandinghere!”CountessMaryturnedpalewithfrightandmadesignstotheboy.Hegrewsilent,andquietensuedforamoment,terribletoCountessMary.SheknewhowNicholasdislikedbeingwaked.ThenthroughthedoorsheheardNicholasclearinghisthroatagainandstirring,andhisvoicesaidcrossly:

           “Ican’tgetamoment’speace....Mary,isthatyou?Whydidyoubringhimhere?”

           “Ionlycameintolookanddidnotnotice...forgiveme....”

           Nicholascoughedandsaidnomore.CountessMarymovedawayfromthedoorandtooktheboybacktothenursery.Fiveminuteslaterlittleblack-eyedthree-year-oldNatásha,herfather’spet,havinglearnedfromherbrotherthatPapawasasleepandMammawasinthesittingroom,rantoherfatherunobservedbyhermother.Thedark-eyedlittlegirlboldlyopenedthecreakingdoor,wentuptothesofawithenergeticstepsofhersturdylittlelegs,andhavingexaminedthepositionofherfather,whowasasleepwithhisbacktoher,roseontiptoeandkissedthehandwhichlayunderhishead.Nicholasturnedwithatendersmileonhisface.

           “Natásha,Natásha!”cameCountessMary’sfrightenedwhisperfromthedoor.“Papawantstosleep.”

           “No,Mamma,hedoesn’twanttosleep,”saidlittleNatáshawithconviction.“He’slaughing.”

           Nicholasloweredhislegs,rose,andtookhisdaughterinhisarms.

           “Comein,Mary,”hesaidtohiswife.

           Shewentinandsatdownbyherhusband.

           “Ididnotnoticehimfollowingme,”shesaidtimidly.“Ijustlookedin.
