           SónyawasalwaysthefirstexcuseCountessMaryfoundforfeelingirritated.

           Havingsatawhilewithhervisitorswithoutunderstandinganythingofwhattheyweresaying,shesoftlylefttheroomandwenttothenursery.

           Thechildrenwereplayingat“goingtoMoscow”inacarriagemadeofchairsandinvitedhertogowiththem.Shesatdownandplayedwiththemalittle,butthethoughtofherhusbandandhisunreasonablecrossnessworriedher.Shegotupand,walkingontiptoewithdifficulty,wenttothesmallsittingroom.

           “Perhapsheisnotasleep;I’llhaveanexplanationwithhim,”shesaidtoherself.LittleAndrew,hereldestboy,imitatinghismother,followedherontiptoe.Shedidnotnoticehim.

           “Mary,dear,Ithinkheisasleep—hewassotired,”saidSónya,meetingherinthelargesittingroom(itseemedtoCountessMarythatshecrossedherpatheverywhere).“Andrewmaywakehim.”

           CountessMarylookedround,sawlittleAndrewfollowingher,feltthatSónyawasright,andforthatveryreasonflushedandwithevidentdifficultyrefrainedfromsayingsomethingharsh.Shemadenoreply,buttoavoidobeyingSónyabeckonedtoAndrewtofollowherquietlyandwenttothedoor.Sónyawentawaybyanotherdoor.FromtheroominwhichNicholaswassleepingcamethesoundofhisevenbreathing,everyslightesttoneofwhichwasfamiliartohiswife.Asshelistenedtoitshesawbeforeherhissmoothhandsomeforehead,hismustache,andhiswholeface,asshehadsooftenseenitinthestillnessofthenightwhenheslept.Nicholassuddenlymovedandclearedhisthroat.
