           Inthepasthehadneverbeenabletofindthatgreatinscrutableinfinitesomething.Hehadonlyfeltthatitmustexistsomewhereandhadlookedforit.Ineverythingnearandcomprehensiblehehadseenonlywhatwaslimited,petty,commonplace,andsenseless.Hehadequippedhimselfwithamentaltelescopeandlookedintoremotespace,wherepettyworldlinesshidingitselfinmistydistancehadseemedtohimgreatandinfinitemerelybecauseitwasnotclearlyseen.AndsuchhadEuropeanlife,politics,Freemasonry,philosophy,andphilanthropyseemedtohim.Buteventhen,atmomentsofweaknessashehadaccountedthem,hismindhadpenetratedtothosedistancesandhehadthereseenthesamepettiness,worldliness,andsenselessness.Now,however,hehadlearnedtoseethegreat,eternal,andinfiniteineverything,andtherefore—toseeitandenjoyitscontemplation—henaturallythrewawaythetelescopethroughwhichhehadtillnowgazedovermen’sheads,andgladlyregardedtheever-changing,eternallygreat,unfathomable,andinfinitelifearoundhim.Andthecloserhelookedthemoretranquilandhappyhebecame.Thatdreadfulquestion,“Whatfor?”whichhadformerlydestroyedallhismentaledifices,nolongerexistedforhim
