           AfterthejunctionwiththearmyofthebrilliantadmiralandPetersburgheroWittgenstein,thismoodandthegossipofthestaffreachedtheirmaximum.Kutúzovsawthisandmerelysighedandshruggedhisshoulders.Onlyonce,aftertheaffairoftheBerëzina,didhegetangryandwritetoBennigsen(whoreportedseparatelytotheEmperor)thefollowingletter:

           “Onaccountofyourspellsofillhealth,willyourexcellencypleasebesogoodastosetoffforKalúgaonreceiptofthis,andthereawaitfurthercommandsandappointmentsfromHisImperialMajesty.”

           ButafterBennigsen’sdeparture,theGrandDukeTsarévichConstantinePávlovichjoinedthearmy.HehadtakenpartinthebeginningofthecampaignbuthadsubsequentlybeenremovedfromthearmybyKutúzov.Nowhavingcometothearmy,heinformedKutúzovoftheEmperor’sdispleasureatthepoorsuccessofourforcesandtheslownessoftheiradvance.TheEmperorintendedtojointhearmypersonallyinafewdays’time.

           Theoldman,experiencedincourtaswellasinmilitaryaffairs—thissameKutúzovwhoinAugusthadbeenchosencommanderinchiefagainstthesovereign’swishesandwhohadremovedtheGrandDukeandheir-apparentfromthearmy—whoonhisownauthorityandcontrarytotheEmperor’swillhaddecidedontheabandonmentofMoscow,nowrealizedatoncethathisdaywasover,thathispartwasplayed,andthatthepowerhewassupposedtoholdwasnolongerhis.Andheunderstoodthisnotmerelyfromtheattitudeofthecourt.
