           Hisfirstunconsciousfeelingofjoyfulanimationproducedbythesightsandsoundsofthebattlefieldwasnowreplacedbyanother,especiallysincehehadseenthatsoldierlyingaloneinthehayfield.Now,seatedontheslopeofthetrench,heobservedthefacesofthosearoundhim.

           Byteno’clocksometwentymenhadalreadybeencarriedawayfromthebattery;twogunsweresmashedandcannonballsfellmoreandmorefrequentlyonthebatteryandspentbulletsbuzzedandwhistledaround.Butthemeninthebatteryseemednottonoticethis,andmerryvoicesandjokeswereheardonallsides.

           “Aliveone!”shoutedamanasawhistlingshellapproached.

           “Notthisway!Totheinfantry!”addedanotherwithloudlaughter,seeingtheshellflypastandfallintotheranksofthesupports.

           “Areyoubowingtoafriend,eh?”remarkedanother,chaffingapeasantwhoduckedlowasacannonballflewover.

           Severalsoldiersgatheredbythewallofthetrench,lookingouttoseewhatwashappeninginfront.

           “They’vewithdrawnthefrontline,ithasretired,”saidthey,pointingovertheearthwork.

           “Mindyourownbusiness,”anoldsergeantshoutedatthem.“Ifthey’veretiredit’sbecausethere’sworkforthemtodofartherback.”

           Andthesergeant,takingoneofthemenbytheshoulders,gavehimashovewithhisknee.Thiswasfollowedbyaburstoflaughter.

           “Tothefifthgun,wheelitup!”cameshoutsfromoneside.

           “Nowthen,alltogether,likebargees!”rosethemerryvoicesofthosewhoweremovingthegun.
