           ThemensoonacceptedPierreintotheirfamily,adoptedhim,gavehimanickname(“ourgentleman”),andmadekindlyfunofhimamongthemselves.

           AshelltoreuptheearthtwopacesfromPierreandhelookedaroundwithasmileashebrushedfromhisclothessomeearthithadthrownup.

           “Andhow’sityou’renotafraid,sir,reallynow?”ared-faced,broad-shoulderedsoldieraskedPierre,withagrinthatdisclosedasetofsound,whiteteeth.

           “Areyouafraid,then?”saidPierre.

           “Whatelsedoyouexpect?”answeredthesoldier.“Shehasnomercy,youknow!Whenshecomessplutteringdown,outgoyourinnards.Onecan’thelpbeingafraid,”hesaidlaughing.

           Severalofthemen,withbrightkindlyfaces,stoppedbesidePierre.Theyseemednottohaveexpectedhimtotalklikeanybodyelse,andthediscoverythathedidsodelightedthem.

           “It’sthebusinessofussoldiers.Butinagentlemanit’swonderful!There’sagentlemanforyou!”

           “Toyourplaces!”criedtheyoungofficertothemengatheredroundPierre.

           Theyoungofficerwasevidentlyexercisinghisdutiesforthefirstorsecondtimeandthereforetreatedbothhissuperiorsandthemenwithgreatprecisionandformality.

           Theboomingcannonadeandthefusilladeofmusketryweregrowingmoreintenseoverthewholefield,especiallytotheleftwhereBagratión’sflècheswere,butwherePierrewasthesmokeofthefiringmadeitalmostimpossibletodistinguishanything.Moreover,hiswholeattentionwasengrossedbywatchingthefamilycircle—separatedfromallelse—formedbythemeninthebattery.
