Chapter 19

           Butastheattackonourleftflanktookplaceintheeveningaftertheretreatofourrearguard(thatis,immediatelyafterthefightatGridnëva),andastheRussiancommandersdidnotwish,orwerenotintime,tobeginageneralengagementthenontheeveningofthetwenty-fourth,thefirstandchiefactionofthebattleofBorodinówasalreadylostonthetwenty-fourth,andobviouslyledtothelossoftheonefoughtonthetwenty-sixth.

           AfterthelossoftheShevárdinoRedoubt,wefoundourselvesonthemorningofthetwenty-fifthwithoutapositionforourleftflank,andwereforcedtobenditbackandhastilyentrenchitwhereitchancedtobe.

           NotonlywastheRussianarmyonthetwenty-sixthdefendedbyweak,unfinishedentrenchments,butthedisadvantageofthatpositionwasincreasedbythefactthattheRussiancommanders—nothavingfullyrealizedwhathadhappened,namelythelossofourpositionontheleftflankandtheshiftingofthewholefieldoftheforthcomingbattlefromrighttoleft—maintainedtheirextendedpositionfromthevillageofNóvoetoUtítsa,andconsequentlyhadtomovetheirforcesfromrighttoleftduringthebattle.SoithappenedthatthroughoutthewholebattletheRussiansopposedtheentireFrencharmylaunchedagainstourleftflankwithbuthalfasmanymen.(Poniatowski’sactionagainstUtítsa,andUvárov’sontherightflankagainsttheFrench,wereactionsdistinctfromthemaincourseofthebattle
