           AndtheRussians,nothavingtimetobeginageneralengagement,withdrewtheirleftwingfromthepositiontheyhadintendedtooccupyandtookupanewpositionwhichhadnotbeenforeseenandwasnotfortified.BycrossingtotheothersideoftheKolochátotheleftofthehighroad,Napoleonshiftedthewholeforthcomingbattlefromrighttoleft(lookingfromtheRussianside)andtransferredittotheplainbetweenUtítsa,Semënovsk,andBorodinó—aplainnomoreadvantageousasapositionthananyotherplaininRussia—andtherethewholebattleofthetwenty-sixthofAugusttookplace.

           HadNapoleonnotriddenoutontheeveningofthetwenty-fourthtotheKolochá,andhadhenotthenorderedanimmediateattackontheredoubtbuthadbeguntheattacknextmorning,noonewouldhavedoubtedthattheShevárdinoRedoubtwastheleftflankofourposition,andthebattlewouldhavetakenplacewhereweexpectedit.InthatcaseweshouldprobablyhavedefendedtheShevárdinoRedoubt—ourleftflank—stillmoreobstinately.WeshouldhaveattackedNapoleoninthecenterorontheright,andtheengagementwouldhavetakenplaceonthetwenty-fifth,inthepositionweintendedandhadfortified.
