           DuringthewholetimeofhisserviceDronhadneverbeendrunkorill,neveraftersleeplessnightsorthehardesttaskshadheshowntheleastfatigue,andthoughhecouldnotreadhehadneverforgottenasinglemoneyaccountorthenumberofquartersofflourinanyoftheendlesscartloadshesoldfortheprince,norasingleshockofthewholecorncroponanysingleacreoftheBoguchárovofields.

           Alpátych,arrivingfromthedevastatedBaldHillsestate,sentforhisDrononthedayoftheprince’sfuneralandtoldhimtohavetwelvehorsesgotreadyfortheprincess’carriagesandeighteencartsforthethingstoberemovedfromBoguchárovo.Thoughthepeasantspaidquitrent,Alpátychthoughtnodifficultywouldbemadeaboutcomplyingwiththisorder,forthereweretwohundredandthirtyhouseholdsatworkinBoguchárovoandthepeasantswerewelltodo.ButonhearingtheorderDronloweredhiseyesandremainedsilent.Alpátychnamedcertainpeasantsheknew,fromwhomhetoldhimtotakethecarts.

           Dronrepliedthatthehorsesofthesepeasantswereawaycarting.Alpátychnamedothers,buttheytoo,accordingtoDron,hadnohorsesavailable:somehorseswerecartingforthegovernment,othersweretooweak,andothershaddiedforwantoffodder.Itseemedthatnohorsescouldbehadevenforthecarriages,muchlessforthecarting.

           AlpátychlookedintentlyatDronandfrowned.JustasDronwasamodelvillageElder,soAlpátychhadnotmanagedtheprince’sestatesfortwentyyearsinvain.
