           “Yes,letthemhaveit,”repliedPrinceAndrew.

           “Ifyounoticedsomedisorderinthegarden,”saidAlpátych,“itwasimpossibletopreventit.Threeregimentshavebeenhereandspentthenight,dragoonsmostly.Itookdownthenameandrankoftheircommandingofficer,tohandinacomplaintaboutit.”

           “Well,andwhatareyougoingtodo?Willyoustayhereiftheenemyoccupiestheplace?”askedPrinceAndrew.

           AlpátychturnedhisfacetoPrinceAndrew,lookedathim,andsuddenlywithasolemngestureraisedhisarm.

           “Heismyrefuge!Hiswillbedone!”heexclaimed.

           Agroupofbareheadedpeasantswasapproachingacrossthemeadowtowardtheprince.

           “Well,good-by!”saidPrinceAndrew,bendingovertoAlpátych.“Youmustgoawaytoo,takeawaywhatyoucanandtelltheserfstogototheRyazánestateortotheonenearMoscow.”

           AlpátychclungtoPrinceAndrew’slegandburstintosobs.Gentlydisengaginghimself,theprincespurredhishorseandrodedowntheavenueatagallop.
