           Hewassittingontheseattheoldprinceusedtoliketositon,andbesidehimstripsofbastwerehangingonthebrokenandwitheredbranchofamagnolia.

           PrinceAndrewrodeuptothehouse.Severallimesintheoldgardenhadbeencutdownandapiebaldmareandherfoalwerewanderinginfrontofthehouseamongtherosebushes.Theshutterswereallclosed,exceptatonewindowwhichwasopen.Alittleserfboy,seeingPrinceAndrew,ranintothehouse.Alpátych,havingsenthisfamilyaway,wasaloneatBaldHillsandwassittingindoorsreadingtheLivesoftheSaints.OnhearingthatPrinceAndrewhadcome,hewentoutwithhisspectaclesonhisnose,buttoninghiscoat,and,hastilysteppingup,withoutawordbeganweepingandkissingPrinceAndrew’sknee.

           Then,vexedathisownweakness,heturnedawayandbegantoreportonthepositionofaffairs.EverythingpreciousandvaluablehadbeenremovedtoBoguchárovo.Seventyquartersofgrainhadalsobeencartedaway.Thehayandthespringcorn,ofwhichAlpátychsaidtherehadbeenaremarkablecropthatyear,hadbeencommandeeredbythetroopsandmowndownwhilestillgreen.Thepeasantswereruined;someofthemtoohadgonetoBoguchárovo,onlyafewremained.

           Withoutwaitingtohearhimout,PrinceAndrewasked:

           “Whendidmyfatherandsisterleave?”meaningwhendidtheyleaveforMoscow.

           Alpátych,understandingthequestiontorefertotheirdepartureforBoguchárovo,repliedthattheyhadleftontheseventhandagainwentintodetailsconcerningtheestatemanagement,askingforinstructions.
