           “Forwardbytheleft.Walk,march!”cametheorderfrominfront.

           Andthehussars,passingalongthelineoftroopsontheleftflankofourposition,haltedbehindourUhlanswhowereinthefrontline.Totherightstoodourinfantryinadensecolumn:theywerethereserve.Higherupthehill,ontheveryhorizon,ourgunswerevisiblethroughthewonderfullyclearair,brightlyilluminatedbyslantingmorningsunbeams.Infront,beyondahollowdale,couldbeseentheenemy’scolumnsandguns.Ouradvancedline,alreadyinaction,couldbeheardbrisklyexchangingshotswiththeenemyinthedale.

           Atthesesounds,longunheard,Rostóv’sspiritsrose,asatthestrainsofthemerriestmusic.Trap-ta-ta-tap!crackedtheshots,nowtogether,nowseveralquicklyoneafteranother.Againallwassilentandthenagainitsoundedasifsomeonewerewalkingondetonatorsandexplodingthem.

           Thehussarsremainedinthesameplaceforaboutanhour.Acannonadebegan.CountOstermannwithhissuiterodeupbehindthesquadron,halted,spoketothecommanderoftheregiment,androdeupthehilltotheguns.

           AfterOstermannhadgone,acommandrangouttotheUhlans.

           “Formcolumn!Preparetocharge!”

           Theinfantryinfrontofthempartedintoplatoonstoallowthecavalrytopass.TheUhlansstarted,thestreamersontheirspearsfluttering,andtrotteddownhilltowardtheFrenchcavalrywhichwasseenbelowtotheleft.

           AssoonastheUhlansdescendedthehill,thehussarswereorderedupthehilltosupportthebattery
