           NowherodebesideIlyínunderthebirchtrees,occasionallypluckingleavesfromabranchthatmethishand,sometimestouchinghishorse’ssidewithhisfoot,or,withoutturninground,handingapipehehadfinishedtoanhussarridingbehindhim,withascalmandcarelessanairasthoughheweremerelyoutforaride.HeglancedwithpityattheexcitedfaceofIlyín,whotalkedmuchandingreatagitation.Heknewfromexperiencethetormentingexpectationofterroranddeaththecornetwassufferingandknewthatonlytimecouldhelphim.

           Assoonasthesunappearedinaclearstripofskybeneaththeclouds,thewindfell,asifitdarednotspoilthebeautyofthesummermorningafterthestorm;dropsstillcontinuedtofall,butverticallynow,andallwasstill.Thewholesunappearedonthehorizonanddisappearedbehindalongnarrowcloudthathungaboveit.Afewminuteslateritreappearedbrighterstillfrombehindthetopofthecloud,tearingitsedge.Everythinggrewbrightandglittered.Andwiththatlight,andasifinreplytoit,camethesoundofgunsaheadofthem.

           BeforeRostóvhadhadtimetoconsideranddeterminethedistanceofthatfiring,CountOstermann-Tolstóy’sadjutantcamegallopingfromVítebskwithorderstoadvanceatatrotalongtheroad.

           Thesquadronovertookandpassedtheinfantryandthebattery—whichhadalsoquickenedtheirpace—rodedownahill,andpassingthroughanemptyanddesertedvillageagainascended.Thehorsesbegantolatherandthementoflush.

           “Halt!Dressyourranks!”theorderoftheregimentalcommanderwasheardahead.
