           Nextday,beforeleaving,PrinceAndrewwenttohisson’srooms.Theboy,curly-headedlikehismotherandglowingwithhealth,satonhisknee,andPrinceAndrewbegantellinghimthestoryofBluebeard,butfellintoareveriewithoutfinishingthestory.Hethoughtnotofthisprettychild,hissonwhomheheldonhisknee,butofhimself.Hesoughtinhimselfeitherremorseforhavingangeredhisfatherorregretatleavinghomeforthefirsttimeinhislifeonbadtermswithhim,andwashorrifiedtofindneither.Whatmeantstillmoretohimwasthathesoughtanddidnotfindinhimselftheformertendernessforhissonwhichhehadhopedtoreawakenbycaressingtheboyandtakinghimonhisknee.

           “Well,goon!”saidhisson.

           PrinceAndrew,withoutreplying,puthimdownfromhiskneeandwentoutoftheroom.

           AssoonasPrinceAndrewhadgivenuphisdailyoccupations,andespeciallyonreturningtotheoldconditionsoflifeamidwhichhehadbeenhappy,wearinessoflifeovercamehimwithitsformerintensity,andhehastenedtoescapefromthesememoriesandtofindsomeworkassoonaspossible.

           “Soyou’vedecidedtogo,Andrew?”askedhissister.

           “ThankGodthatIcan,”repliedPrinceAndrew.“Iamverysorryyoucan’t.”

           “Whydoyousaythat?”repliedPrincessMary.“Whydoyousaythat,whenyouaregoingtothisterriblewar,andheissoold?MademoiselleBouriennesayshehasbeenaskingaboutyou....”

           Assoonasshebegantospeakofthat,herlipstrembledandhertearsbegantofall.PrinceAndrewturnedawayandbeganpacingtheroom.
