           “Ifyouaskme,”saidPrinceAndrew,withoutlookingup(hewascensuringhisfatherforthefirsttimeinhislife),“Ididnotwishtospeakaboutit,butasyouaskmeIwillgiveyoumyfrankopinion.IfthereisanymisunderstandinganddiscordbetweenyouandMary,Ican’tblameherforitatall.Iknowhowshelovesandrespectsyou.Sinceyouaskme,”continuedPrinceAndrew,becomingirritable—ashewasalwaysliabletodooflate—“Icanonlysaythatifthereareanymisunderstandingstheyarecausedbythatworthlesswoman,whoisnotfittobemysister’scompanion.”

           Theoldmanatfirststaredfixedlyathisson,andanunnaturalsmiledisclosedthefreshgapbetweenhisteethtowhichPrinceAndrewcouldnotgetaccustomed.

           “Whatcompanion,mydearboy?Eh?You’vealreadybeentalkingitover!Eh?”

           “Father,Ididnotwanttojudge,”saidPrinceAndrew,inahardandbittertone,“butyouchallengedme,andIhavesaid,andalwaysshallsay,thatMaryisnottoblame,butthosetoblame—theonetoblame—isthatFrenchwoman.”

           “Ah,hehaspassedjudgment...passedjudgement!”saidtheoldmaninalowvoiceand,asitseemedtoPrinceAndrew,withsomeembarrassment,butthenhesuddenlyjumpedupandcried:“Beoff,beoff!Letnotatraceofyouremainhere!...”

           PrinceAndrewwishedtoleaveatonce,butPrincessMarypersuadedhimtostayanotherday.Thatdayhedidnotseehisfather,whodidnotleavehisroomandadmittednoonebutMademoiselleBourienneandTíkhon,butaskedseveraltimeswhetherhissonhadgone.
