           PrincessMarywasstillthesametimid,plainmaidengettingoninyears,uselesslyandjoylesslypassingthebestyearsofherlifeinfearandconstantsuffering.MademoiselleBouriennewasthesamecoquettish,self-satisfiedgirl,enjoyingeverymomentofherexistenceandfullofjoyoushopesforthefuture.Shehadmerelybecomemoreself-confident,PrinceAndrewthought.Dessalles,thetutorhehadbroughtfromSwitzerland,waswearingacoatofRussiancutandtalkingbrokenRussiantotheservants,butwasstillthesamenarrowlyintelligent,conscientious,andpedanticpreceptor.Theoldprincehadchangedinappearanceonlybythelossofatooth,whichleftanoticeablegapononesideofhismouth;incharacterhewasthesameasever,onlyshowingstillmoreirritabilityandskepticismastowhatwashappeningintheworld.LittleNicholasalonehadchanged.Hehadgrown,becomerosier,hadcurlydarkhair,and,whenmerryandlaughing,quiteunconsciouslyliftedtheupperlipofhisprettylittlemouthjustasthelittleprincessusedtodo.Healonedidnotobeythelawofimmutabilityintheenchanted,sleepingcastle.Butthoughexternallyallremainedasofold,theinnerrelationsofallthesepeoplehadchangedsincePrinceAndrewhadseenthemlast.Thehouseholdwasdividedintotwoalienandhostilecamps,whochangedtheirhabitsforhissakeandonlymetbecausehewasthere.Totheonecampbelongedtheoldprince,MademoiselleBourienne,andthearchitect;totheotherPrincessMary,Dessalles,littleNicholas,andalltheoldnursesandmaids.
