           BeforejoiningtheWesternArmywhichwasthen,inMay,encampedatDrissa,PrinceAndrewvisitedBaldHillswhichwasdirectlyonhisway,beingonlytwomilesofftheSmolénskhighroad.Duringthelastthreeyearstherehadbeensomanychangesinhislife,hehadthought,felt,andseensomuch(havingtraveledbothintheeastandthewest),thatonreachingBaldHillsitstruckhimasstrangeandunexpectedtofindthewayoflifethereunchangedandstillthesameineverydetail.Heenteredthroughthegateswiththeirstonepillarsanddroveuptheavenueleadingtothehouseasifhewereenteringanenchanted,sleepingcastle.Thesameoldstateliness,thesamecleanliness,thesamestillnessreignedthere,andinsidetherewasthesamefurniture,thesamewalls,sounds,andsmell,andthesametimidfaces,onlysomewhatolder.
