           “Now,lookout,master!”hecried.

           Fasterstillthetwotroykasflewsidebyside,andfastermovedthefeetofthegallopingsidehorses.Nicholasbegantodrawahead.Zakhár,whilestillkeepinghisarmsextended,raisedonehandwiththereins.

           “Noyouwon’t,master!”heshouted.

           NicholasputallhishorsestoagallopandpassedZakhár.Thehorsesshoweredthefinedrysnowonthefacesofthoseinthesleigh—besidethemsoundedquickringingbellsandtheycaughtconfusedglimpsesofswiftlymovinglegsandtheshadowsofthetroykatheywerepassing.Thewhistlingsoundoftherunnersonthesnowandthevoicesofgirlsshriekingwereheardfromdifferentsides.

           Againcheckinghishorses,Nicholaslookedaroundhim.Theywerestillsurroundedbythemagicplainbathedinmoonlightandspangledwithstars.

           “ZakhárisshoutingthatIshouldturntotheleft,butwhytotheleft?”thoughtNicholas.“ArewegettingtotheMelyukóvs’?IsthisMelyukóvka?Heavenonlyknowswherewearegoing,andheavenknowswhatishappeningtous—butitisverystrangeandpleasantwhateveritis.”Andhelookedroundinthesleigh.

           “Look,hismustacheandeyelashesareallwhite!”saidoneofthestrange,pretty,unfamiliarpeople—theonewithfineeyebrowsandmustache.

           “IthinkthisusedtobeNatásha,”thoughtNicholas,“andthatwasMadameSchoss,butperhapsit’snot,andthisCircassianwiththemustacheIdon’tknow,butIloveher.”

           “Aren’tyoucold?”heasked.
