           Nicholasexpressedhisdisapprovalofthepostponementofthemarriageforayear;butNatáshaattackedherbrotherwithexasperation,provingtohimthatitcouldnotbeotherwise,andthatitwouldbeabadthingtoenterafamilyagainstthefather’swill,andthatsheherselfwisheditso.

           “Youdon’tatallunderstand,”shesaid.

           Nicholaswassilentandagreedwithher.

           Herbrotheroftenwonderedashelookedather.Shedidnotseematalllikeagirlinloveandpartedfromheraffiancedhusband.Shewaseven-temperedandcalmandquiteascheerfulasofold.ThisamazedNicholasandevenmadehimregardBolkónski’scourtshipskeptically.Hecouldnotbelievethatherfatewassealed,especiallyashehadnotseenherwithPrinceAndrew.Italwaysseemedtohimthattherewassomethingnotquiterightaboutthisintendedmarriage.
