           Hecouldtalkaboutruraleconomywiththecount,fashionswiththecountessandNatásha,andaboutalbumsandfancyworkwithSónya.Sometimesthehouseholdbothamongthemselvesandinhispresenceexpressedtheirwonderathowithadallhappened,andattheevidentomenstherehadbeenofit:PrinceAndrew’scomingtoOtrádnoeandtheircomingtoPetersburg,andthelikenessbetweenNatáshaandPrinceAndrewwhichhernursehadnoticedonhisfirstvisit,andAndrew’sencounterwithNicholasin1805,andmanyotherincidentsbetokeningthatithadtobe.

           Inthehousethatpoeticdullnessandquietreignedwhichalwaysaccompaniesthepresenceofabetrothedcouple.Oftenwhenallsittingtogethereveryonekeptsilent.Sometimestheotherswouldgetupandgoawayandthecouple,leftalone,stillremainedsilent.Theyrarelyspokeoftheirfuturelife.PrinceAndrewwasafraidandashamedtospeakofit.Natáshasharedthisasshedidallhisfeelings,whichsheconstantlydivined.Onceshebeganquestioninghimabouthisson.PrinceAndrewblushed,asheoftendidnow—Natáshaparticularlylikeditinhim—andsaidthathissonwouldnotlivewiththem.

           “Whynot?”askedNatáshainafrightenedtone.

           “Icannottakehimawayfromhisgrandfather,andbesides...”

           “HowIshouldhavelovedhim!”saidNatásha,immediatelyguessinghisthought;“butIknowyouwishtoavoidanypretextforfindingfaultwithus.”
