           Fartherbackbeyondthedarktreesaroofglitteredwithdew,totherightwasaleafytreewithbrilliantlywhitetrunkandbranches,andaboveitshonethemoon,nearlyatitsfull,inapale,almoststarless,springsky.PrinceAndrewleanedhiselbowsonthewindowledgeandhiseyesrestedonthatsky.

           Hisroomwasonthefirstfloor.Thoseintheroomsabovewerealsoawake.Heheardfemalevoicesoverhead.

           “Justoncemore,”saidagirlishvoiceabovehimwhichPrinceAndrewrecognizedatonce.

           “Butwhenareyoucomingtobed?”repliedanothervoice.

           “Iwon’t,Ican’tsleep,what’stheuse?Comenowforthelasttime.”

           Twogirlishvoicessangamusicalpassage—theendofsomesong.

           “Oh,howlovely!Nowgotosleep,andthere’sanendofit.”

           “Yougotosleep,butIcan’t,”saidthefirstvoice,comingnearertothewindow.Shewasevidentlyleaningrightout,fortherustleofherdressandevenherbreathingcouldbeheard.Everythingwasstone-still,likethemoonanditslightandtheshadows.PrinceAndrew,too,darednotstir,forfearofbetrayinghisunintentionalpresence.

           “Sónya!Sónya!”heagainheardthefirstspeaker.“Oh,howcanyousleep?Onlylookhowgloriousitis!Ah,howglorious!Dowakeup,Sónya!”shesaidalmostwithtearsinhervoice.“Therenever,neverwassuchalovelynightbefore!”

           Sónyamadesomereluctantreply.
