           Onhearingthisindifferentvoice,Rostóvgrewfrightenedatwhathewasdoing;thethoughtofmeetingtheEmperoratanymomentwassofascinatingandconsequentlysoalarmingthathewasreadytorunaway,buttheofficialwhohadquestionedhimopenedthedoor,andRostóventered.

           Ashortstoutmanofaboutthirty,inwhitebreechesandhighbootsandabatisteshirtthathehadevidentlyonlyjustputon,standinginthatroom,andhisvaletwasbuttoningontothebackofhisbreechesanewpairofhandsomesilk-embroideredbracesthat,forsomereason,attractedRostóv’sattention.Thismanwasspeakingtosomeoneintheadjoiningroom.

           Rostóvturnedandwasabouttogo,butthemaninthebracesstoppedhim.

           “IcomefromMajorDenísov,”answeredRostóv.

           “Areyouanofficer?”
