           RostóvhadnotthecouragetopersuadeDenísov,thoughheinstinctivelyfeltthatthewayadvisedbyTúshinandtheotherofficerswasthesafest,andthoughhewouldhavebeengladtobeofservicetoDenísov.Heknewhisstubbornwillandstraightforwardhastytemper.

           WhenthereadingofDenísov’svirulentreply,whichtookmorethananhour,wasover,Rostóvsaidnothing,andhespenttherestofthedayinamostdejectedstateofmindamidDenísov’shospitalcomrades,whohadgatheredroundhim,tellingthemwhatheknewandlisteningtotheirstories.Denísovwasmoodilysilentalltheevening.

           Lateintheevening,whenRostóvwasabouttoleave,heaskedDenísovwhetherhehadnocommissionforhim.

           “Yes,waitabit,”saidDenísov,glancingroundattheofficers,andtakinghispapersfromunderhispillowhewenttothewindow,wherehehadaninkpot,andsatdowntowrite.

           “Itseemsit’snouseknockingone’sheadagainstawall!”hesaid,comingfromthewindowandgivingRostóvalargeenvelope.InitwasthepetitiontotheEmperordrawnupbytheauditor,inwhichDenísov,withoutalludingtotheoffensesofthecommissariatofficials,simplyaskedforpardon.
