           Halfanhourlater,theRhetorreturnedtoinformtheseekerofthesevenvirtues,correspondingtothesevenstepsofSolomon’stemple,whicheveryFreemasonshouldcultivateinhimself.Thesevirtueswere:1.Discretion,thekeepingofthesecretsoftheOrder.2.ObediencetothoseofhigherranksintheOrder.3.Morality.4.Loveofmankind.5.Courage.6.Generosity.7.Theloveofdeath.

           “Intheseventhplace,try,bythefrequentthoughtofdeath,”theRhetorsaid,“tobringyourselftoregarditnotasadreadedfoe,butasafriendthatfreesthesoulgrownwearyinthelaborsofvirtuefromthisdistressfullife,andleadsittoitsplaceofrecompenseandpeace.”

           “Yes,thatmustbeso,”thoughtPierre,whenafterthesewordstheRhetorwentaway,leavinghimtosolitarymeditation.
