           “DearCountess,whatanage...Shehasbeenlaidup,poorchild...attheRazumóvski’sball...andCountessApráksina...Iwassodelighted...”camethesoundsofanimatedfemininevoices,interruptingoneanotherandminglingwiththerustlingofdressesandthescrapingofchairs.Thenoneofthoseconversationsbeganwhichlastoutuntil,atthefirstpause,theguestsrisewitharustleofdressesandsay,“Iamsodelighted...Mamma’shealth...andCountessApráksina...”andthen,againrustling,passintotheanteroom,putoncloaksormantles,anddriveaway.Theconversationwasonthechieftopicoftheday:theillnessofthewealthyandcelebratedbeauofCatherine’sday,CountBezúkhov,andabouthisillegitimatesonPierre,theonewhohadbehavedsoimproperlyatAnnaPávlovna’sreception.
