           Pierrewenthome,butRostóvwithDólokhovandDenísovstayedonattheclubtilllate,listeningtothegypsiesandothersingers.

           “Wellthen,tilltomorrowatSokólniki,”saidDólokhov,ashetookleaveofRostóvintheclubporch.

           “Anddoyoufeelquitecalm?”Rostóvasked.

           Dólokhovpaused.

           “Well,yousee,I’lltellyouthewholesecretofduelingintwowords.Ifyouaregoingtofightaduel,andyoumakeawillandwriteaffectionateletterstoyourparents,andifyouthinkyoumaybekilled,youareafoolandarelostforcertain.Butgowiththefirmintentionofkillingyourmanasquicklyandsurelyaspossible,andthenallwillberight,asourbearhuntsmanatKostromáusedtotellme.‘Everyonefearsabear,’hesays,‘butwhenyouseeoneyourfear’sallgone,andyouronlythoughtisnottolethimgetaway!’Andthat’showitiswithme.Àdemain,moncher.”*

           Nextday,ateightinthemorning,PierreandNesvítskidrovetotheSokólnikiforestandfoundDólokhov,Denísov,andRostóvalreadythere.Pierrehadtheairofamanpreoccupiedwithconsiderationswhichhadnoconnectionwiththematterinhand.Hishaggardfacewasyellow.Hehadevidentlynotsleptthatnight.Helookedaboutdistractedlyandscreweduphiseyesasifdazzledbythesun.Hewasentirelyabsorbedbytwoconsiderations:hiswife’sguilt,ofwhichafterhissleeplessnighthehadnottheslightestdoubt,andtheguiltlessnessofDólokhov,whohadnoreasontopreservethehonorofamanwhowasnothingtohim....
