           Everytensecondsacannonballflewcompressingtheairaround,orashellburstinthemidstofthatdensethrong,killingsomeandsplashingwithbloodthosenearthem.

           Dólokhov—nowanofficer—woundedinthearm,andonfoot,withtheregimentalcommanderonhorsebackandsometenmenofhiscompany,representedallthatwasleftofthatwholeregiment.Impelledbythecrowd,theyhadgotwedgedinattheapproachtothedamand,jammedinonallsides,hadstoppedbecauseahorseinfronthadfallenunderacannonandthecrowdweredraggingitout.Acannonballkilledsomeonebehindthem,anotherfellinfrontandsplashedDólokhovwithblood.Thecrowd,pushingforwarddesperately,squeezedtogether,movedafewsteps,andagainstopped.

           “Moveonahundredyardsandwearecertainlysaved,remainhereanothertwominutesanditiscertaindeath,”thoughteachone.
