           WhilePrinceAndrewwenttoreportaboutthepurple-facedgeneral,thatgentleman—evidentlynotsharingBorís’conceptionoftheadvantagesoftheunwrittencodeofsubordination—lookedsofixedlyatthepresumptuouslieutenantwhohadpreventedhisfinishingwhathehadtosaytotheadjutantthatBorísfeltuncomfortable.HeturnedawayandwaitedimpatientlyforPrinceAndrew’sreturnfromthecommanderinchief’sroom.

           “Yousee,mydearfellow,Ihavebeenthinkingaboutyou,”saidPrinceAndrewwhentheyhadgoneintothelargeroomwheretheclavichordwas.“It’snouseyourgoingtothecommanderinchief.Hewouldsayalotofpleasantthings,askyoutodinner”(“Thatwouldnotbebadasregardstheunwrittencode,”thoughtBorís),“butnothingmorewouldcomeofit.Therewillsoonbeabattalionofusaides-de-campandadjutants!Butthisiswhatwe’lldo:Ihaveagoodfriend,anadjutantgeneralandanexcellentfellow,PrinceDolgorúkov;andthoughyoumaynotknowit,thefactisthatnowKutúzovwithhisstaffandallofuscountfornothing.EverythingisnowcenteredroundtheEmperor.
