           Bothhadchangedgreatlysincetheylastmetandbothwereinahurrytoshowthechangesthathadtakenplaceinthem.

           “Oh,youdamneddandies!Cleanandfreshasifyou’dbeentoafete,notlikeussinnersoftheline,”criedRostóv,withmartialswaggerandwithbaritonenotesinhisvoice,newtoBorís,pointingtohisownmud-bespatteredbreeches.TheGermanlandlady,hearingRostóv’sloudvoice,poppedherheadinatthedoor.

           “Eh,isshepretty?”heaskedwithawink.

           “Whydoyoushoutso?You’llfrightenthem!”saidBorís.“Ididnotexpectyoutoday,”headded.“IonlysentyouthenoteyesterdaybyBolkónski—anadjutantofKutúzov’s,who’safriendofmine.Ididnotthinkhewouldgetittoyousoquickly....Well,howareyou?Beenunderfirealready?”askedBorís.

           Withoutanswering,Rostóvshookthesoldier’sCrossofSt.Georgefastenedtothecordingofhisuniformand,indicatingabandagedarm,glancedatBergwithasmile.

           “Asyousee,”hesaid.

           “Indeed?Yes,yes!”saidBorís,withasmile.“Andwetoohavehadasplendidmarch.Youknow,ofcourse,thatHisImperialHighnessrodewithourregimentallthetime,sothatwehadeverycomfortandeveryadvantage.WhatreceptionswehadinPoland!Whatdinnersandballs!Ican’ttellyou.AndtheTsarévichwasverygracioustoallourofficers.”

           Andthetwofriendstoldeachotheroftheirdoings,theoneofhishussarrevelsandlifeinthefightingline,theotherofthepleasuresandadvantagesofserviceundermembersoftheImperialfamily.
