           TheDonhorsehewasridingwasonehehadboughtfromaCossackduringthecampaign,andheworeacrumpledhussarcapstuckjauntilybackononesideofhishead.AsherodeuptothecamphethoughthowhewouldimpressBorísandallhiscomradesoftheGuardsbyhisappearance—thatofafightinghussarwhohadbeenunderfire.

           TheGuardshadmadetheirwholemarchasifonapleasuretrip,paradingtheircleanlinessanddiscipline.Theyhadcomebyeasystages,theirknapsacksconveyedoncarts,andtheAustrianauthoritieshadprovidedexcellentdinnersfortheofficersateveryhaltingplace.Theregimentshadenteredandleftthetownwiththeirbandsplaying,andbytheGrandDuke’sordersthemenhadmarchedallthewayinstep(apracticeonwhichtheGuardspridedthemselves),theofficersonfootandattheirproperposts.Boríshadbeenquartered,andhadmarchedalltheway,withBergwhowasalreadyincommandofacompany.Berg,whohadobtainedhiscaptaincyduringthecampaign,hadgainedtheconfidenceofhissuperiorsbyhispromptitudeandaccuracyandhadarrangedhismoneymattersverysatisfactorily.Borís,duringthecampaign,hadmadetheacquaintanceofmanypersonswhomightproveusefultohim,andbyaletterofrecommendationhehadbroughtfromPierrehadbecomeacquaintedwithPrinceAndrewBolkónski,throughwhomhehopedtoobtainapostonthecommanderinchief’sstaff.BergandBorís,havingrestedafteryesterday’smarch,weresitting,cleanandneatlydressed,ataroundtableinthecleanquartersallottedtothem,playingchess.
