           Itwasnotthedress,butthefaceandwholefigureofPrincessMarythatwasnotpretty,butneitherMademoiselleBouriennenorthelittleprincessfeltthis;theystillthoughtthatifablueribbonwereplacedinthehair,thehaircombedup,andthebluescarfarrangedloweronthebestmaroondress,andsoon,allwouldbewell.Theyforgotthatthefrightenedfaceandthefigurecouldnotbealtered,andthathowevertheymightchangethesettingandadornmentofthatface,itwouldstillremainpiteousandplain.AftertwoorthreechangestowhichPrincessMarymeeklysubmitted,justasherhairhadbeenarrangedonthetopofherhead(astylethatquitealteredandspoiledherlooks)andshehadputonamaroondresswithapale-bluescarf,thelittleprincesswalkedtwiceroundher,nowadjustingafoldofthedresswithherlittlehand,nowarrangingthescarfandlookingatherwithherheadbentfirstononesideandthenontheother.

           “No,itwillnotdo,”shesaiddecidedly,claspingherhands.“No,Mary,reallythisdressdoesnotsuityou.Ipreferyouinyourlittlegrayeverydaydress.Nowplease,doitformysake.Katie,”shesaidtothemaid,“bringtheprincesshergraydress,andyou’llsee,MademoiselleBourienne,howIshallarrangeit,”sheadded,smilingwithaforetasteofartisticpleasure.

           ButwhenKatiebroughttherequireddress,PrincessMaryremainedsittingmotionlessbeforetheglass,lookingatherface,andsawinthemirrorhereyesfulloftearsandhermouthquivering,readytoburstintosobs.
