           Thefiringdieddownandsoldiers,talkingeagerly,streamedoutofasidestreet.

           “Nothurt,Petróv?”askedone.

           “We’vegivenit‘emhot,mate!Theywon’tmakeanotherpushnow,”saidanother.

           “Youcouldn’tseeathing.Howtheyshotattheirownfellows!Nothingcouldbeseen.Pitch-dark,brother!Isn’ttheresomethingtodrink?”

           TheFrenchhadbeenrepulsedforthelasttime.AndagainandagaininthecompletedarknessTúshin’sgunsmovedforward,surroundedbythehumminginfantryasbyaframe.

           Inthedarkness,itseemedasthoughagloomyunseenriverwasflowingalwaysinonedirection,hummingwithwhispersandtalkandthesoundofhoofsandwheels.Amidthegeneralrumble,thegroansandvoicesofthewoundedweremoredistinctlyheardthananyothersoundinthedarknessofthenight.Thegloomthatenvelopedthearmywasfilledwiththeirgroans,whichseemedtomeltintoonewiththedarknessofthenight.Afterawhilethemovingmassbecameagitated,someonerodepastonawhitehorsefollowedbyhissuite,andsaidsomethinginpassing:“Whatdidhesay?Whereto,now?Halt,isit?Didhethankus?”cameeagerquestionsfromallsides.Thewholemovingmassbeganpressingclosertogetherandareportspreadthattheywereorderedtohalt:evidentlythoseinfronthadhalted.Allremainedwheretheywereinthemiddleofthemuddyroad.

           Fireswerelightedandthetalkbecamemoreaudible.CaptainTúshin,havinggivenorderstohiscompany,sentasoldiertofindadressingstationoradoctorforthecadet,andsatdownbyabonfirethesoldiershadkindledontheroad.
