           WhenthesupportsattachedtoTúshin’sbatteryhadbeenmovedawayinthemiddleoftheactionbysomeone’sorder,thebatteryhadcontinuedfiringandwasonlynotcapturedbytheFrenchbecausetheenemycouldnotsurmisethatanyonecouldhavetheeffronterytocontinuefiringfromfourquiteundefendedguns.Onthecontrary,theenergeticactionofthatbatteryledtheFrenchtosupposethathere—inthecenter—themainRussianforceswereconcentrated.Twicetheyhadattemptedtoattackthispoint,butoneachoccasionhadbeendrivenbackbygrapeshotfromthefourisolatedgunsonthehillock.

           SoonafterPrinceBagratiónhadlefthim,TúshinhadsucceededinsettingfiretoSchönGrabern.

           “Lookatthemscurrying!It’sburning!Justseethesmoke!Fine!Grand!Lookatthesmoke,thesmoke!”exclaimedtheartillerymen,brighteningup.

           Alltheguns,withoutwaitingfororders,werebeingfiredinthedirectionoftheconflagration.Asifurgingeachotheron,thesoldierscriedateachshot:“Fine!That’sgood!Lookatit...Grand!”Thefire,fannedbythebreeze,wasrapidlyspreading.TheFrenchcolumnsthathadadvancedbeyondthevillagewentback;butasthoughinrevengeforthisfailure,theenemyplacedtengunstotherightofthevillageandbeganfiringthematTúshin’sbattery.

           Intheirchildlikeglee,arousedbythefireandtheirluckinsuccessfullycannonadingtheFrench,ourartillerymenonlynoticedthisbatterywhentwoballs,andthenfourmore,fellamongourguns,oneknockingovertwohorsesandanothertearingoffamunition-wagondriver’sleg.
