           Itwasnolongerpossibleforthehussarstoretreatwiththeinfantry.TheywerecutofffromthelineofretreatontheleftbytheFrench.Howeverinconvenienttheposition,itwasnownecessarytoattackinordertocutawaythroughforthemselves.

           ThesquadroninwhichRostóvwasservinghadscarcelytimetomountbeforeitwashaltedfacingtheenemy.Again,asattheEnnsbridge,therewasnothingbetweenthesquadronandtheenemy,andagainthatterribledividinglineofuncertaintyandfear—resemblingthelineseparatingthelivingfromthedead—laybetweenthem.Allwereconsciousofthisunseenline,andthequestionwhethertheywouldcrossitornot,andhowtheywouldcrossit,agitatedthemall.

           Thecolonelrodetothefront,angrilygavesomereplytoquestionsputtohimbytheofficers,and,likeamandesperatelyinsistingonhavinghisownway,gaveanorder.Noonesaidanythingdefinite,buttherumorofanattackspreadthroughthesquadron.Thecommandtoformuprangoutandthesaberswhizzedastheyweredrawnfromtheirscabbards.Stillnoonemoved.Thetroopsoftheleftflank,infantryandhussarsalike,feltthatthecommanderdidnothimselfknowwhattodo,andthisirresolutioncommunicateditselftothemen.

           “Ifonlytheywouldbequick!”thoughtRostóv,feelingthatatlastthetimehadcometoexperiencethejoyofanattackofwhichhehadsooftenheardfromhisfellowhussars.

           “Fo’ward,withGod,lads!”rangoutDenísov’svoice.“Atatwotfo’ward!”

           Thehorses’croupsbegantoswayinthefrontline.
