           PrinceBagratión,utteringhiswordswithanOrientalaccent,spokeparticularlyslowly,asiftoimpressthefactthattherewasnoneedtohurry.However,heputhishorsetoatrotinthedirectionofTúshin’sbattery.PrinceAndrewfollowedwiththesuite.BehindPrinceBagratiónrodeanofficerofthesuite,theprince’spersonaladjutant,Zherkóv,anorderlyofficer,thestaffofficeronduty,ridingafinebobtailedhorse,andacivilian—anaccountantwhohadaskedpermissiontobepresentatthebattleoutofcuriosity.Theaccountant,astout,full-facedman,lookedaroundhimwithanaïvesmileofsatisfactionandpresentedastrangeappearanceamongthehussars,Cossacks,andadjutants,inhiscamletcoat,ashejoltedonhishorsewithaconvoyofficer’ssaddle.

           “Hewantstoseeabattle,”saidZherkóvtoBolkónski,pointingtotheaccountant,“buthefeelsapaininthepitofhisstomachalready.”

           “Oh,leaveoff!”saidtheaccountantwithabeamingbutrathercunningsmile,asifflatteredatbeingmadethesubjectofZherkóv’sjoke,andpurposelytryingtoappearstupiderthanhereallywas.

           “Itisverystrange,monMonsieurPrince,”saidthestaffofficer.(HerememberedthatinFrenchthereissomepeculiarwayofaddressingaprince,butcouldnotgetitquiteright.)

           BythistimetheywereallapproachingTúshin’sbattery,andaballstruckthegroundinfrontofthem.

           “What’sthatthathasfallen?”askedtheaccountantwithanaïvesmile.

           “AFrenchpancake,”answeredZherkóv.

           “Sothat’swhattheyhitwith?”askedtheaccountant.
