           TobeabletocrushitabsolutelyheawaitedthearrivaloftherestofthetroopswhowereontheirwayfromVienna,andwiththisobjectofferedathreedays’truceonconditionthatbotharmiesshouldremaininpositionwithoutmoving.Muratdeclaredthatnegotiationsforpeacewerealreadyproceeding,andthathethereforeofferedthistrucetoavoidunnecessarybloodshed.CountNostitz,theAustriangeneraloccupyingtheadvancedposts,believedMurat’semissaryandretired,leavingBagratión’sdivisionexposed.AnotheremissaryrodetotheRussianlinetoannouncethepeacenegotiationsandtooffertheRussianarmythethreedays’truce.BagratiónrepliedthathewasnotauthorizedeithertoacceptorrefuseatruceandsenthisadjutanttoKutúzovtoreporttheofferhehadreceived.

           AtrucewasKutúzov’ssolechanceofgainingtime,givingBagratión’sexhaustedtroopssomerest,andlettingthetransportandheavyconvoys(whosemovementswereconcealedfromtheFrench)advanceifbutonestagenearerZnaim.Theofferofatrucegavetheonly,andaquiteunexpected,chanceofsavingthearmy.OnreceivingthenewsheimmediatelydispatchedAdjutantGeneralWintzingerode,whowasinattendanceonhim,totheenemycamp.Wintzingerodewasnotmerelytoagreetothetrucebutalsotooffertermsofcapitulation,andmeanwhileKutúzovsenthisadjutantsbacktohastentotheutmostthemovementsofthebaggagetrainsoftheentirearmyalongtheKrems-Znaimroad.
