           Fromthesoundofthesevoices,theinattentivewayKozlóvskilookedathim,thedisrespectfulmanneroftheexhaustedclerk,thefactthattheclerkandKozlóvskiweresquattingonthefloorbyatubsoneartothecommanderinchief,andfromthenoisylaughteroftheCossacksholdingthehorsesnearthewindow,PrinceAndrewfeltthatsomethingimportantanddisastrouswasabouttohappen.

           HeturnedtoKozlóvskiwithurgentquestions.

           “Immediately,Prince,”saidKozlóvski.“DispositionsforBagratión.”

           “Whataboutcapitulation?”

           “Nothingofthesort.Ordersareissuedforabattle.”

           PrinceAndrewmovedtowardthedoorfromwhencevoiceswereheard.Justashewasgoingtoopenitthesoundsceased,thedooropened,andKutúzovwithhiseaglenoseandpuffyfaceappearedinthedoorway.PrinceAndrewstoodrightinfrontofKutúzovbuttheexpressionofthecommanderinchief’sonesoundeyeshowedhimtobesopreoccupiedwiththoughtsandanxietiesastobeobliviousofhispresence.Helookedstraightathisadjutant’sfacewithoutrecognizinghim.

           “Well,haveyoufinished?”saidhetoKozlóvski.

           “Onemoment,yourexcellency.”

           Bagratión,agauntmiddle-agedmanofmediumheightwithafirm,impassivefaceofOrientaltype,cameoutafterthecommanderinchief.

           “Ihavethehonortopresentmyself,”repeatedPrinceAndrewratherloudly,handingKutúzovanenvelope.

           “Ah,fromVienna?Verygood.Later,later!”

           KutúzovwentoutintotheporchwithBagratión.

           “Well,good-by,Prince,”saidhetoBagratión.
