           “Bolkónski!Bolkónski!...Don’tyouhear?Eh?Comequick...”heshouted.

           Enteringthehouse,PrinceAndrewsawNesvítskiandanotheradjutanthavingsomethingtoeat.Theyhastilyturnedroundtohimaskingifhehadanynews.Ontheirfamiliarfaceshereadagitationandalarm.ThiswasparticularlynoticeableonNesvítski’susuallylaughingcountenance.

           “Whereisthecommanderinchief?”askedBolkónski.

           “Here,inthathouse,”answeredtheadjutant.

           “Well,isittruethatit’speaceandcapitulation?”askedNesvítski.

           “Iwasgoingtoaskyou.IknownothingexceptthatitwasallIcoulddotogethere.”

           “Andwe,mydearboy!It’sterrible!IwaswrongtolaughatMack,we’regettingitstillworse,”saidNesvítski.“Butsitdownandhavesomethingtoeat.”

           “Youwon’tbeabletofindeitheryourbaggageoranythingelsenow,Prince.AndGodonlyknowswhereyourmanPeteris,”saidtheotheradjutant.

           “Whereareheadquarters?”

           “WearetospendthenightinZnaim.”

           “Well,IhavegotallIneedintopacksfortwohorses,”saidNesvítski.“They’vemadeupsplendidpacksforme—fittocrosstheBohemianmountainswith.It’sabadlookout,oldfellow!Butwhat’sthematterwithyou?Youmustbeilltoshiverlikethat,”headded,noticingthatPrinceAndrewwincedasatanelectricshock.

           “It’snothing,”repliedPrinceAndrew.
