           Heagainvividlyrecalledthedetailsofthebattle,nolongerdim,butdefiniteandintheconciseforminwhichheimaginedhimselfstatingthemtotheEmperorFrancis.Hevividlyimaginedthecasualquestionsthatmightbeputtohimandtheanswershewouldgive.HeexpectedtobeatoncepresentedtotheEmperor.Atthechiefentrancetothepalace,however,anofficialcamerunningouttomeethim,andlearningthathewasaspecialmessengerledhimtoanotherentrance.

           “Totherightfromthecorridor,EuerHochgeboren!Thereyouwillfindtheadjutantonduty,”saidtheofficial.“HewillconductyoutotheMinisterofWar.”

           Theadjutantonduty,meetingPrinceAndrew,askedhimtowait,andwentintotheMinisterofWar.FiveminuteslaterhereturnedandbowingwithparticularcourtesyusheredPrinceAndrewbeforehimalongacorridortothecabinetwheretheMinisterofWarwasatwork.TheadjutantbyhiselaboratecourtesyappearedtowishtowardoffanyattemptatfamiliarityonthepartoftheRussianmessenger.

           PrinceAndrew’sjoyousfeelingwasconsiderablyweakenedasheapproachedthedooroftheminister’sroom.Hefeltoffended,andwithouthisnoticingitthefeelingofoffenseimmediatelyturnedintooneofdisdainwhichwasquiteuncalledfor.Hisfertilemindinstantlysuggestedtohimapointofviewwhichgavehimarighttodespisetheadjutantandtheminister.“Awayfromthesmellofpowder,theyprobablythinkiteasytogainvictories!”hethought.Hiseyesnarroweddisdainfully,heenteredtheroomoftheMinisterofWarwithpeculiarlydeliberatesteps.
