           “Therenow!”saidtheofficerofthesuite,“that’sgrapeshot.”

           HepointedtotheFrenchguns,thelimbersofwhichwerebeingdetachedandhurriedlyremoved.

           OntheFrenchside,amidthegroupswithcannon,acloudofsmokeappeared,thenasecondandathirdalmostsimultaneously,andatthemomentwhenthefirstreportwasheardafourthwasseen.Thentworeportsoneafteranother,andathird.

           “Oh!Oh!”groanedNesvítskiasifinfiercepain,seizingtheofficerofthesuitebythearm.“Look!Amanhasfallen!Fallen,fallen!”

           “Two,Ithink.”

           “IfIwereTsarIwouldnevergotowar,”saidNesvítski,turningaway.

           TheFrenchgunswerehastilyreloaded.Theinfantryintheirblueuniformsadvancedtowardthebridgeatarun.Smokeappearedagainbutatirregularintervals,andgrapeshotcrackedandrattledontothebridge.ButthistimeNesvítskicouldnotseewhatwashappeningthere,asadensecloudofsmokearosefromit.ThehussarshadsucceededinsettingitonfireandtheFrenchbatterieswerenowfiringatthem,nolongertohinderthembutbecausethegunsweretrainedandtherewassomeonetofireat.

           TheFrenchhadtimetofirethreeroundsofgrapeshotbeforethehussarsgotbacktotheirhorses.Twoweremisdirectedandtheshotwenttoohigh,butthelastroundfellinthemidstofagroupofhussarsandknockedthreeofthemover.

           Rostóv,absorbedbyhisrelationswithBogdánich,hadpausedonthebridgenotknowingwhattodo.
