           Rostóvnolongerlookedatthecolonel,hehadnotime.Hewasafraidoffallingbehindthehussars,somuchafraidthathisheartstoodstill.Hishandtrembledashegavehishorseintoanorderly’scharge,andhefeltthebloodrushtohisheartwithathud.Denísovrodepasthim,leaningbackandshoutingsomething.Rostóvsawnothingbutthehussarsrunningallaroundhim,theirspurscatchingandtheirsabersclattering.

           “Stretchers!”shoutedsomeonebehindhim.

           Rostóvdidnotthinkwhatthiscallforstretchersmeant;heranon,tryingonlytobeaheadoftheothers;butjustatthebridge,notlookingattheground,hecameonsomesticky,troddenmud,stumbled,andfellonhishands.Theothersoutstrippedhim.

           “Atbosszides,Captain,”heheardthevoiceofthecolonel,who,havingriddenahead,hadpulleduphishorsenearthebridge,withatriumphant,cheerfulface.

           Rostóvwipinghismuddyhandsonhisbreecheslookedathisenemyandwasabouttorunon,thinkingthatthefartherhewenttothefrontthebetter.ButBogdánich,withoutlookingatorrecognizingRostóv,shoutedtohim:

           “Who’sthatrunningonthemiddleofthebridge?Totheright!Comeback,Cadet!”hecriedangrily;andturningtoDenísov,who,showingoffhiscourage,hadriddenontotheplanksofthebridge:

           “Whyrunrisks,Captain?Youshoulddismount,”hesaid.

           “Oh,everybullethasitsbillet,”answeredVáskaDenísov,turninginhissaddle.
